The deposition of John Nottingham aged 25 years or there abouts, sworn and examined saith,
That sometime last summer a day before the County Court being in the little house of Joseph Godwins by the court house Samuel Palmer and the said Godwin being there the nine pins without doors were brought into the said house and the said Godwins son setting the pins up said he would lay a quart or pottle of cyder he would tip seven, and Mr. Palmer said if his father would pay for him he would lay he did not tip six. On which the boy (his father first promiseing payment) tipt but five on which the said Palmer asked for the cyder won, and Godwin refused to pay it, on which he replyed he would burn the nine pins and flung one towards or in the fire. Whereupon not long after they were scuttling together both on the ground and the said Godwin undermost but this depondent see never a blow struck, but this depondent and his brother William Spoke to Mr. Palmer to rise of the said Godwin and the said Palmer replyed he would if he did not hold him by the hair on which they took them up and instantly they fell down on the timber quarters. Several abusive words passing between them on the said Palmers saying he would burn the pins the said Godwin told the said Palmer he was worse then Tom Cary that was hanged this being truth to the best of my rememberance and the whole that this depondent remembers and further saith not.

The deposition of William Nottingham aged 24 years or there abouts sworn and examined saith,
That sometime last summer a day before the County Court being in the little house of Joseph Godwins by the court house Samuel Palmer and the said Godwin being there, the nine pins without doors were brought into the said house, and the said Palmer kicking or throwing one of the said nine pins into or towards the fire on which some words arose between them and this depondent going forth of the said house to see after his horse and returning back found the said Godwin and Palmer upon the ground, but see no blows struck the said Godwin being undermost this depondent and his brother John takeing them up and they fell down again upon the timber or near it the said Godwin being undermost and instantly they got up again and further this depondent see not nor can remember this being to the best of this depondents knowledge and further saith not.

The above Depositions by John and William Nottingham regarding a fight between Joseph Godwin and Samuel Palmer. Sometime in the Summer of 1693 at Joseph Godwin's house a fight insued between Joseph Godwin and Samuel Palmer over a game of nine Pins (type of Bowling.) this game normally played side was brought into the House, a bet that Godwin's son would knock down 7 of the nine pins for a quart of cyder (his father would pay off the bet.) Samuel Palmer bet that Godwin's son couldn't knock down six. The boy only tipped five. At this Godwin said he would burn all the pins and flung one in the fire. A phisycal fight insued and words were spoken. - Gail Walczyk.
Tom Cary, slave of John Swan, was convicted of larceny and arson. He stole sundry items from the house of Thomas Richards and set it on fire.
